Emergency evacuation for short-term missionaries or short-term teams that already have health insurance that covers them overseas.
We get a lot of calls from missionaries and team leaders that have an international medical policy or shared health plan, but still need emergency evacuation and political evacuation coverage. And we have options for evacuation even though true “evacuation-only plans” are being discontinued due to carrier liability and fear over transporting a client in an emergency only to discover that their insurance will not cover them or will not be accepted.
A large portion of the risk for any international travel insurance or overseas medical insurance policy is emergency evacuation and emergency transportation. The average medical evacuation costs between $20,000 – $40,000. Since we have been in business in 1997, we have seen many evacuations of clients or their teammates. Those have been as low as $15,000, and as high as $112,000.
These evacuation plans specifically addresses these concerns, and is very affordable for short-term missionaries or long-term missionaries for up to 12 months. It is also renewable (Get a free quote). These policies also include many additional important and helpful travel benefits that you otherwise might not have access to.
A “rescue” plan is a good idea for anyone traveling in remote areas, areas with poor medical care, those on “shared” faith-based plans, those who otherwise object to insurance, or have nationalized health care in their country, but are not covered for emergency return or political evacuation. Note that our BUPA plan is not a “Search and rescue” plan. If you know where you are, they will come get you in an emergency and transport you, rather than simply transporting you from one medical care facility that is not prepared or staffed to help you to another that has the required treatment or surgical options. Please also be aware that BUPA does not sell to U.S. or Canadian residents traveling overseas. But will insure non U.S. and non-Canadian resident traveling anywhere else in the world including, to the USA or Canada.
Whether it is a broken bone or a stroke, a bleeding wound or would you rather that treatment be done locally or get emergency evacuation transportation? Would you prefer a local police officer /local medical staff to set your bone or be medically transported by an international insurance company with expertise and are on call 24/7 with nurses and doctors on hand and translators at the ready? These plans are specifically for those who become injured and are not able to acquire the needed treatment where they are.

You can also add enhanced Accidental Death and Dismemberment, an adventure sports rider, and more, to many of these policies to further protect your family or future ability to work on their behalf (as in the case of construction accidents, etc.). Additionally there are no deductible and no coinsurance out-of-pocket expenses with most of these plans (Sometimes you must request this option.)
Please keep in mind is that due the low amount for these plans, these policies do not cover pre-existing conditions. A pre-existing condition is defined as any Injury, Illness, sickness, disease, or other physical, medical, Mental or Nervous Disorder, condition or ailment that, with reasonable medical certainty, existed at the time of Application or at any time during the three (3) years prior to the Effective Date of this insurance, whether or not previously manifested, symptomatic or known, diagnosed, Treated, or disclosed to the Company prior to the Effective Date, and including any and all subsequent, chronic or recurring complications or consequences related thereto or resulting or arising therefrom.
Having said that, some policies offer limited coverage for Sudden and Unexpected Reoccurrence of a Pre-existing condition.
